TBT: Bringing Lola Home

When K and I decided we wanted an English bulldog baby to join our family, we almost fell into a "too good to be true" scam for a very cute bulldog named Coco. Luckily after back and forth correspondence, we realized there were discrepancies in the person's story and the photos before sending any money. We moved on with our search and finally found a reliable breeder in Florida that was willing to deliver her to us at which time payment will be made.

This was the first photo the breeder sent us and of course we fell right in love and were sold.

On November 25th, 2014 the breeder drove Lola up from Ft Lauderdale in torrential rain to Orlando. It was a work day so I arranged for them to meet at my office at lunch time and for K to come with a crate to transport her back home since he has a flexible work schedule. It was storming outside so she got soaked in the exchange but luckily I remembered to bring a towel to the office.

K took another 20 minutes to get there so while I sat in the lobby bundling her shivering body to warm her up, word spread around the office that a cute puppy was there so a bunch of coworkers came to meet her, give her hugs and just play. She was a good sport being the center of lots of attention and I immediately felt attached to her.

When I got home that evening and after spending some play time with her, we decided that the name Lola Chanel Brand suited her personality perfectly. In the next days coming, we worked on getting her acclimated with us, the house, her bed and of course the most dreaded potty training.

That same week also happened to be Thanksgiving on Thursday so Lola took her first 2 1/2 hour road trip to my in-laws for the weekend. With her not being potty trained, the trip was challenging with a few smelly mishaps but I have to report that she's become the best travel buddy that just sleeps so I'm really happy we got her accustomed to road-tripping from young. She actually can't get in the car fast enough to go somewhere!

With us being the social people we are that like to go out on the weekends, we've been taking her out to play with other dogs and lots of people since she was tiny so today she really gets along with just about anyone and is such a social butterfly!

Shortly after Thanksgiving we were back on the road again to spend Christmas with family and a night with friends and their basset-hound which went much smoother than the Thanksgiving trip. Potty training had started to kick in and we were seeing some light in the tunnel. Lola quickly became attached to us just as much as we became to her so the pieces of the puzzle came together nicely and our little family had begun.

So that's my story about how this bundle of cuteness, joy, and MISCHIEF joined the Brand household.

Feel free to share any TBT memories of your fur-babies!

PS: She's ecstatic in these photos, don't be fooled by the English bulldog resting pouty face LOL

Skincare Essentials

I talked about my favorite facial products last year in this skincare review  and shared several tried and true products that have stayed in my rotation for many years. Since then, I've tried some new products although many remain the same. Here are my faves:

I really like the Yes to Grapefruit Facial Wipes but will probably try the cucumber scent next purchase. I've been using the L'Oreal Go 360 Clean Facial Cleanser on a daily basis for a few years because I love how it softly exfoliates your skin to remove dirt or makeup so I won't be changing out this product anytime soon.

I use my Clarisonic Mia along with Philosophy's Purity Cleanser about once a week. Since I don't use the Mia very often, the battery dies very quickly so that can be frustrating when it dies half way through my cleaning routine. There are also cheaper options such as the Olay Advanced Cleansing System that do the job just as well (I've tried both).

I've been using Cetaphil's Gentle Antibacterial Cleansing Bar since high school and will probably never give it up. It's very gentle on your face and does a great job of cleaning and hydrating. K also likes how it works and uses it on a daily basis. The Murad Oil-Control Mattifier moisturizer is a new product recommended to me when I recently went to get a facial and expressed some disappointment with my skinny getting shiny throughout day. I only use it on my forehead (problem area) and use my regular Garnier Anti-Sun Damage Moisturizer on the rest of my face. It does it's job well at mattifying to prevent a shiny face.

I don't use Tarte's Maracuja Oil daily but I like applying it at night after showering and cleaning my face thoroughly. Maracuja oil is a hydrating treatment that helps with anti-aging and makes your skin firmer, brighter and smoother (will not cause breakouts) so this is what I use to fight against wrinkles. Body Shop's Camomile Gentle Eye Makeup Remover has been in my rotation for probably 15 years and I have never come across any product better so it will remain as one of my staple skincare products. It's VERY gentle on your eyes and not oily, it smells good and works really effectively so I only have good things to say about this makeup remover and definitely recommend it.

What are your tried and true facial products?

Weekend Whereabouts

Hey hey! Hope this Monday treats you well.

I had a pretty quiet weekend and only ventured out for some errands on Saturday and then brunch on Sunday with K so not many exciting things to share.

K was in Atlanta for a convention from Thursday to late Saturday night so I decided to have a quiet night at home on Friday after a stressful week. I arrived home to some pretty goodies in the mail from Phax Swimwear (sharing more details later this week). Lola also got lots of snuggle time with mom.

I rented The Intern movie on Friday but was too mentally exhausted to watch it until Saturday morning and I really loved the movie and whole story-line. Uplifting to say the least!

After the movie, I went out to do some errands before heading home to clean and get the house organized. I had all intentions of going downtown to the Food & Wine Festival but decided against it and just stayed home to relax, blog and watch some TV. K returned home late Saturday night just before I was heading to sleep.

Sunday was "date day" with K so we headed downtown to Dexter's for some brunch with Lola in tote. I made sure to get most of the errands, cleaning and food prep done on Saturday so we could just spend time together on Sunday and relax.

After brunch we met up with some friends at 903 Mills Market so Lola and her best friend Louie could play while we caught up with friends.

It was a very relaxing weekend with some sunshine and fun mixed in there.

How was your weekend?

Friday Faves

Happy Friday friends!

I have to admit it wasn't the best week for me. I'm not going to go on about it but I'm ready for a break this weekend. I do believe brighter days are ahead!

In much better news, K and I have been planning and finalizing some of our trips for 2016 and four have been booked so far. Can you guess where we're going?

On Wednesday, my company had an Empanada food truck visit the office and give out free empanadas for all employees. So delish!

I've said this before but the mornings are not my favorite beast to tackle. I'm just not a morning person but I found some tips from this article were useful.

I've been warming up to one piece swimsuits and I found these two beauties at Target. Both I would definitely wear.

This Avocado Caprese Skillet Chicken recipe is on my radar for dinner next week. I love an excuse to eat more avocados.

One thing I do every weekend is plan my meals ahead for the upcoming week. This also ensures that I don't overbuy at the grocery as I tend make impulse purchases (still do sometimes) but this free printable has been handy to keep my meal planning organized.

Do you do weekly meal planning? How do you stay organized?

Have a fabulous weekend everyone!

Beautiful Caribbean Homes

Most of you know that I was born and raised in Trinidad, a southern Caribbean island that has a small sister island called Tobago. Houses there are far from cookie cutter looking and homeowners aren't afraid to use lots of color. I travel there quite often to visit my family and lifelong friends, some who have amazing homes filled with lots of character and color. I've also rented several vacation homes in Tobago that are just as cute and tropical so I thought I'd share some of my favorite Caribbean style homes.

Tippy Top
It was named Tippy Top because it sits on the top of a mountain with a beautiful view of the golf course.

Tobago Rental Houses
Houses in the islands are often given "nicknames" which becomes part of their mailing address. This is more common for vacation rental properties but some people name their private homes (like Tippy Top) to distinguish it from others.
